Civil Rights Backpack
In the 1950s and 1960s, many strategic events in the Civil Rights Movement unfolded in Alabama, including the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Selma-to-Montgomery March, Freedom Rides, and the Children’s Crusade. Organizations and individuals came together to protest in an attempt to change the economic and social injustices. The many protests spurred change mainly through legislative acts, such as the Voting Rights Act of 1965. However, the change didn’t come without sacrifice, hardship, and often violent opposition. Students will learn about the people and events of the Civil Rights Movement in Alabama through the use of primary sources, activity sheets, and hands-on materials.
