The Alabama Archives & History Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization established in 2002 to support the work of the Alabama Department of Archives & History. The Foundation’s focus is on permanent, sustainable improvements that supplement what is possible with state resources appropriated by the Legislature for general operations.

In an initial campaign, the Foundation raised $2 million to furnish and equip several of the ADAH’s public spaces constructed through a state-funded building expansion. This project provided space for genealogical and historical research in the EBSCO Research Room; space for educational programs and public events in the E. E. Hale Room, the Ocllo S. Malone Lobby, and the Joseph M. Farley Alabama Power Auditorium; and a sense of ownership and source of pride for the people of Alabama.

Between 2008 and 2012, the Foundation raised $8 million to accomplish the renovation and expansion of the ADAH’s permanent galleries, beginning the development of the award-winning exhibits in the Museum of Alabama. The Museum’s galleries employ artifacts, original films, immersive scenery, and interactive programs to help visitors understand the story of Alabama, from prehistory to the present. Alabama Voices, the centerpiece exhibition of the Museum, opened in 2014.

In 2023, the Foundation will begin a new campaign to further equip the ADAH to continue expanding its offerings for the people of Alabama. In addition to providing updates to Alabama Voices, the campaign will fund renovations to the Hands-On Gallery, the Alabama Treasures gallery, and the First Alabamians exhibit.
