Montgomery, AL (11/08/2024) – On Thursday, November 14, at 12:00pm CT, author Kathryn Braund will present a book talk on her work, Mapping Conquest: The Battle Maps of Horseshoe Bend, at the Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH). The program will be presented in-person in the ADAH’s Joseph M. Farley Alabama Power Auditorium. It will also be livestreamed through the ADAH’s Facebook page and YouTube channel. Admission is free.

In Mapping Conquest: The Battle Maps of Horseshoe Bend, Kathryn H. Braund examines a unique collection of manuscript maps of the Horseshoe Bend battleground, created by soldiers in the aftermath of the March 27, 1814, battle. Braund’s study provides biographical details about these amateur cartographers and their maps, which are largely unknown to scholars and the public. Her book reveals American and Creek perspectives of the battle and examines their influence on interpretive efforts today.

Before her retirement in 2020, Dr. Braund served as the Hollifield Professor of Southern History at Auburn University. She earned an M.A. from Auburn University and a Ph.D. from Florida State University. Dr. Braund has authored, co-authored, and edited numerous books on southeastern Native Americans, the Federal Road, and William Bartram.
