Montgomery, AL (6/22/23) – The Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH) is pleased to announce the 2023 lineup of its popular summer film series Alabama in the Movies. This four-week series features movies with Alabama connections and concludes with an exclusive advanced screening of a new documentary presented in partnership with Alabama Public Television (APT). Screenings will be held every Thursday in July beginning at 6:00 pm in the ADAH’s Joseph M. Farley Alabama Power Auditorium. Admission is FREE! Light concessions will be available for purchase beginning at 5:30. Thursday, July 6: Fox & the Hound (1981): This beloved Disney animated film tells the story of the unlikely friendship between a red fox named Tod and a hound dog named Copper. Chief, Copper’s wise mentor, was voiced by Alabama native Maxwell Emmett “Pat” Buttram. Family. Rated G. 

 

Thursday, July 13: Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006): NASCAR superstar Ricky Bobby’s world crumbles when Jean Girard, a French Formula One champion, emerges as an intimidating competitor. Stripped of his success, Ricky Bobby embarks on a journey to reclaim his top spot on the racetrack. This movie is set and was partially filmed at Alabama’s Talladega Superspeedway. Starring Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, and Sacha Baron Cohen. Comedy. Rated PG-13.

 

Thursday, July 20: Selma, Lord Selma (1999): Based on a 1980 book of the same name by Sheyann Webb-Christburg, Rachel West, and Frank Sikora, this Disney film is the true story of two young African American girls who become involved in the Civil Rights Movement following their attendance at a speech delivered by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Accompanied by a white seminary student named Jonathan, the girls join the Selma-to-Montgomery march, fighting for equal rights for all. Family. Rated G.

 

Thursday, July 27: Sink the Alabama (2023): Presented in partnership with APT, join us for an exclusive advance screening of this new documentary before it airs on television. A combination of documentary and dramatization from multiple viewpoints, the story of the CSS Alabama and her captain, Raphael Semmes, is a cautionary tale of bravado and rebellion during the Civil War. Producer Robert Clem will introduce the film and be available for a Q&A after the screening. A small exhibit of artifacts and records related to the CSS Alabama from the ADAH’s collections will be on view. Documentary. Rated TV-G.

 

The Alabama Department of Archives and History is the state’s government-records repository, a special-collections library and research facility, and home to the Museum of Alabama, the state history museum. It is located in downtown Montgomery, directly across Washington Avenue from the State Capitol. The Museum of Alabama is open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 to 4:30.
